Lowcountry Farm Tours

Lowcountry Farm Tours 2014 is just around the corner and I can't wait! If you live in the Charleston area, this is a really special family event that you shouldn't miss. For one day multiple Johns Island and Wadmalaw farms are open to the public for tours and tastings. Yes, many of the farms are open for tours other times but there's something extra fun about being a part of a large group, traveling farm to farm for one day. :)

The last time I was able to go was 2012 and we had a pretty tired [read: grumpy] 1.5 year old in tow so we only saw a couple farms. But he did enjoy the food and loved seeing the animals post-naptime. haha. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from Ambrose Farm.

If you have never been to Ambrose Farm, you really have to go! And on your way home, stop by their Stono Market for lunch at the cafe or to pick up some farm fresh eggs, raw milk, produce, pimento cheese (soooo good!), meat, or freezer meals ready to pop in the oven. (Seriously- there freezer meals are amazing!)

Farmer Pete explaining their farming practices.

We also picked strawberries, ate yummy tacos, and swung on a tire swing. Plenty of fun for everyone. :) Get your tickets and get out to support your local farmers- I hope to see you there!!!

P.S. The little tidbits given by Farmer Pete about surviving in today's farming world were mind blowing. If you've ever binged on Netflix documentaries about the food industry- you don't want to miss what he has to say!

Angel Oak Restaurant {Foodie Friday}

Helloooooo, Shrimp and Grits. Angel Oak Restaurant is one of our favorite restaurants in Charleston, although by mailing it's on John's Island, yet it's physically at the end of West Ashley. Confused? Don't be... all you need to know is that it's really good and you will probably want reservations for dinner. Also, follow their Facebook for almost daily specials.

Ready to see some amazing yumminess?

Brie en Croute / Pimento Cheese with Toast Points Snack (snack is code for $3)

These were both amazing. I am a huge fan of pimento cheese and Angel Oak's is some of my absolute favorite!

I. LOVE. THE. SHRIMP. AND. GRITS. OMGosh. They are actually called the "Bang Bang Shrimp and Grits" BANG BANG.

The grits are awesome, the sauce on them is fantastic, the shrimp is local, and it is "decorated" with fried green tomatoes. Perfection.

Now may I present to you... The Piggy Mac. oooh yeah.

Creamy mornet cheese sauce with pasta over BBQ pulled pork finished with gruyere and parmesan

It's every bit as good as you are imagining it to be. Kent orders this almost every time we go and rarely can eat even half of it. More leftovers for me!

So what will you be ordering? :)

La Tela Pizzeria {Foodie Friday}

Kent and I stumbled upon La Tela Pizzaria on Johns Island (by Kiawah) months ago and I've been dreaming about going back ever since. Outside of of my amazing Chicago pizza experience- this is the best pizza EVER. Get your butt there asap!

Ready for a post about the most amazing pizza in a 100 mile radius of Charleston WITH a lot of gratuitous pictures???

Okay, well I am...

I present to you the "Ricotta Pizza"- Ricotta, caramelized onions, pecorino romano, mozzarella, sausage... slices of heaven complete with gooey ricotta clouds.

But let me back up for a second. Not only is the pizza the most amazing pizza ever, but the restaurant itself is the cutest family atmosphere. Which I had no idea about till we left because we sat at a cute little table by the windows... and the bar. Who are we to keep a bartender from making some money?

Oh yeah, and that bread. Squishy. Warm. Yummy oil. Amaz... Okay, I'll be honest- the bread was not too much better than Wonderbread with some good oil. But really you're about to eat a ton of pizza, so no big deal skipping the bread. But if you're really missing the extra carbs, order another round of prosecco. ;)

5 points for cute presentation though!

Okay, one last picture of that amazing pizza...

And in case you thought it might be awkward to take pictures of your food while out to eat- don't test me. Kent did and I ended the evening taking pictures over his shoulder of the shrimp pizza next to us. I want that one too!
